About Hanningfield Reservoir
Hanningfield Reservoir is the 11th largest reservoir in England with an area of nearly 900 acres. It was constructed by W. & C. French in 1957 at a cost of about £6m. The hamlet of Peasdown, along with Giffords Farm and Fremnells Manor were flooded to create the reservoir. No buildings survive underwater, although some foundations can still be seen at very low water levels in Middlemead Bay.
The reservoir was developed in an area formerly known as Sandon Valley and large parts of the reservoir and its surrounding countryside have now been developed as a nature reserve.
